Fore River Sanctuary - Portland, Maine
Below are a few photos from the Fore River Sanctuary in Portland, Maine. There is a great bit of Maine history if you visit the Fore River Sanctuary and there are signs there that you can read about it located along the beginning of the trail. In the 1820-1830s the Cumberland and Oxford Canal was built to connect Sebago Lake to the North to Portland in the South. The construction of the canal was mainly done by Irish immigrants because the locals at the time were mostly made up of farmers. The laborers dug trenches that were essentially 30 feet surface width and 10 feet channel width by 4 feet deep. They used wooden boats that were a little over 9 and a half feet wide that were able to carry massive amounts of materials from the more northern parts of Maine and bring them south. Here and Here are some links with information about the Fore River and Cumberland and Oxford Canals.
