Taking A Look Back
I was recently going through some of my old photos to try and find some relevant photos for my website and though I unfortunately didn’t find what I was originally looking for, I happened upon some older photos that I took over the years. Many of the photos I found were from 10 years ago or more. I find some of the photos I took to be interesting to be able to look back onto what places used to be like not that long ago. The photos I’ve found of Portland for example look a bit different these days with all the construction that has happened in the Old Port and around the city.
Below is a photo I took on the muddy shores of South Portland looking across to Portland, Maine. I went through a period of using my tripod to take landscapes that included myself in the foreground. I might end up revisiting this in the near future.
The photo below was taken while walking around the streets of Portland in 2013. I thought the scene of the barbershop was interesting with the city reflected in the glass.
Below is a photo taken similarly as the one above walking the streets of Portland, Maine. I wonder if any of the businesses are still there today. I have memories of going to the Old Port Tavern occasionally in my early 20s and right near it was a sandwich shop that would stay open until after the bars had to close. Honestly, I feel like any major bar hopping type local such as the Old Port should have.
Below is another photo taken in 2013 atop Hackers Hill at night in Casco, Maine.
Below is a photo taken of a squirrel in 2014 in Portland, Maine. I’m not even sure why, but I do remember photographing a lot of squirrels for a period of time. In Portland, Maine they will often run right up to you expecting you to give them some food.
Below was a photo taken at Willard Beach at Fishermans Point in South Portland, Maine. I was taking a walk with my camera one night and came upon a man playing bagpipes as the sun was setting.
Below are a few photos taken at Kettle Cove in Cape Elizabeth, Maine one night with my tripod. Fun experimenting with long exposures to capture different elements at all at once.
Below are a couple photos taken one night in Standish, Maine looking at Sebago Lake.
Below is a photo taken around sunset one night at Ferry Beach in Scarborough, Maine. Ferry Beach was probably the beach I frequented the most in my early 20s. Especially during the off season when it wasn’t so busy.
Below is a photo I took one night while walking around Portland on a First Friday with friends. I’m unsure if they still do First Friday Art Walks in Portland anymore, but they used to be a pretty good time. Being a young man in my early 20s and a Photography and New Media student I enjoyed seeing all the different forms of art and how people expressed themselves. I also remember fondly of there being a lot of drinks and food at many of the art exhibits. The scene below was one of a man shooting flames into the air as a crowd looks on.
The image below was taken while I was a photography student or shortly thereafter. I remember I was working odd shifts at the time and often would be all night until early morning. I had my camera and my tripod with me one night and decided to set it up and try to capture the light of an electrical substation which would light up every so many seconds and then turn off. I’m unsure of the settings I used, but I think the result turned out pretty interesting.
Below is a photo taken while hiking Pleasant Mountain in Bridgton, Maine.
Below is a scene from South Portland, Maine showing a Private Beach spray painted on some rocks.
The final image is of a scene from Portland, Maine in 2014 of a place to get some Tacos.
